Fall festivities to do with your horse - It will be a real treat!

Posted by Lynnsy Diekman - Saddle Up on Sep 29th 2021

Fall is a beautiful time of year, but as the leaves change, the temperature also drops. This means shorter days and less time to ride. Even though we will miss the summer time spent with our horse, there are plenty of fun, seasonal activities to do with your four legged friend! You may not be able to ride as much, but you can still spend quality time with your horse.

Go for a Fall trail ride!
Weather permitting, Fall trail rides can be breath taking! It can be one final hoorah before winter and you can see all the beautiful color changes. Something to think about is fall time equals less bugs! That is always enjoyable! You can take a trip up to the mountains, see the leaves changing colors, not have to deal with the extreme heat, and not be bothered by bugs. I think that sounds like a win! This would be a great opportunity to hit a natural forest or spots specifically known for its fall foliage.

Fall photo shoot anyone?

Have you ever wanted to have a photo session done with you and your horse? Maybe for Christmas cards or even just for fun? Fall is the perfect time! It offers gorgeous scenery and an array of colors, to make the perfect portraits. You can include just your horse, you and your horse, or the whole family! Hire a professional or just have fun with your friends/family. Groom your horse and don't be afraid to dress yourself up too! Make it a Halloween theme or just embrace the golden beauty of fall time.

Spooky season is upon us, enter a costume contest!

If you and your horse are into Halloween, now is the time to check out upcoming costume contests! There are plenty of them in the area and some even include obstacles or timed events to add to the fun! Be creative and pick a fun costume for you and your horse. This would be tons of fun and allow you to experience a new activity with your trusty steed.

End of year maintenance.

Now that things are slowing down, it is the time to focus on your horse's health. Fall is a great time to get their teeth looked at, sheaths cleaned (for geldings), vaccines done, and fall worming. These things are so important, especially after a summer of great adventures! Everything could check out just fine, but it never hurts to visit these things and make sure your horse is all taken care of.

Problem solving and spending quality time.

Every horse person runs into bumps in the road and has things to work through with their horse. Once the competitions are over and you have some down time, you can really look at the overall picture of things. This is a great time to work through those problems and spend some quality time with your partner. You don't even have to ride necessarily, even just being there with them would make a huge difference. You can work on trailering, feet issues, desensitizing, or so many more. Take the time and make a plan. Set goals for yourself and never be afraid to reach out for help if needed.

Autumn can be such a fun time of year, even for horse lovers!

We wish you and your horse a beautiful Fall and minimal spooking :)
