It is hard to believe there are 350 breeds of horses out there in the world. Each breed has special traits and unique skills to make them stand out. Even though we have a wide variety to choose from, there are certain breeds that have always been fan favorites. People seek out certain horses because they love their characteristics and personalities. One person’s favorite may not be another person’s choice and that’s ok! Let’s take a look at the top 10 most popular horse breeds as of 2023. 

1.Thoroughbred 

Coming in at number 1 is the Thoroughbred. They are known purely for their performance ability and intense speed. They are very agile, but can also be hot blooded. They tend to have a free-spirited personality and a lot of energy. They can be used for many different things, but racing is the most popular use. 

2.Quarter Horse 

Quarter Horses take the number 2 spot and are my personal favorite. They are not only athletic, but very muscular and versatile. They have a calm demeanor, but can be show stoppers. Quarter Horses are great for beginners or professionals. They can handle so many different disciplines or be the perfect family horse.

3.Arabian 

Arabians are known as the oldest breed in history. They have extreme power, even with their dainty stature. One of the biggest traits is their wild tendencies and hot temper. They excel with extreme riding, like endurance competitions. Don’t let their appearance fool you, they can be very athletic! 

4.Clydesdale 

Draft horses have become very popular as riding horses and many draft horse competitions have been started. The breeds are evolving from a work horse to an enjoyable riding horse. They are tall and muscular, as well as quiet and trainable. Originally, they were mainly used in farming, but now they are great options for beginners or families. 

5.Appaloosa 

Appaloosa horses are sought after mainly because of their distinct and unique colors. They are gorgeous and can have such eye-catching coats. They are very versatile and can be used for many different riding styles. They have a very rich history and I think that also makes them a top choice for some people. They are mostly used for casual riding or showing. A lot of Appaloosas are used in Circus acts because of their color.

6.Morgan 

Morgan horses are a very popular choice, especially for saddle seat competitions. They are athletic, friendly, and versatile. They typically perform well and are very trainable. Morgan's were originally carriage horses, but have evolved to many different disciplines.

7.Warmblood

Warmblood horses are a cross between hot blooded horses and cold blooded horses. They are bulky, athletic, and excel in sporting activities. They have a picture mixture of a strong demeanor and a calm demeanor. 

8.Andalusian

Andalusians are very powerful and majestic creatures. They are known for their elegant manes and high energy. Not only are they agile, but also have great stamina. They are very athletic and excel in dressage riding or parades. 9.Paint Paint horses are a favorite for many people and can be very desirable. They also have a very unique coat and can have amazing patterns. Paints are very powerful and versatile. Many riders use them in western riding, showing, and reining. 

10.Shetland Pony 

Coming in at number 10 is the Shetland Pony. While we all know how onry they can be, they are a first choice for many people. They are actually considered to be one of the most intelligent horse breeds. Shetlands are great for trick training and can even be used for some sports. Many families pick them for a kids first horse or even just to have as a pet. They can also be great companions for performance horses.
