12 Strange Horse Laws - Laughable, but true!

Posted by Lynnsy Diekman - Saddle Up on May 4th 2022

Like everything in this world, there are laws pertaining to horses and equestrians. Some are logical, while others are almost laughable. Back when horses were used as main transportation, many of these laws came about and still stand to this day. How some of them went as far as they did, I have no idea, but they are unique for sure! I am very curious if anyone has ever been fined or even experienced jail time by going against some of these laws. Also, what events occurred that brought these up in the first place? I got a kick out of reading them, so I hope you do too!

1. In New York, donkeys are not allowed to sleep in bathtubs.

2. In Colorado, Washington, D.C., and Utah, it is illegal to fish horseback.

3. It is illegal to open or close an umbrella near a horse in New York City.

4. In New Orleans, it is illegal to tie a horse to a tree alongside a public highway

5. It is illegal for horses to neigh after 10 PM in Pocataligo, Georgia.

6. In Tennessee it is illegal to lasso fish while on a horse.

7. In Charleston, South Carolina, your horse is required to wear diapers in public areas.

8. In Burns, Oregon, law states that your horse must pay admission to enter the taverns.

9. In Burdville, Vermont, no horse is allowed to wander around between March 1st and October 20th.

10. If you live in Hartsville, Illinois, you can get jail time for riding an ugly horse.

11. Horses are required to wear hats in hot weather in Rasario, Argentina

12. There is a misworded ordinance in Wolf Point, Montana that states: No horse shall be allowed in public without its owner wearing a halter.

I guess my plans of fishing on my horse are out of the question :)
