Winter Preparation
Posted by Saddle Up on Nov 6th 2015
Summer really seemed to fly by and now it's already November! Winter is coming and here are a few tips to make sure you and your horses are prepared for the coming cold and snow!
Blankets: Now is a great time to make sure your horse's winter blankets are in good repair, are clean, and still fit. If you do this now before the heavy snow comes, you won't be in a panic mode trying to get it all done hours before the storm hits. The sooner the better!

Water: Make sure you have a way to keep your water tanks from freezing during the winter. Be sure to inspect all outlets, cords, etc... and do a test run before you trust the heater with your horses. A mishap can cause tiny electric shocks in the water, discouraging the horses from drinking. If you do all this early you'll have tons of peace of mind during those freezing nights.

Hay: Do you have enough stored hay in a dry place like a barn or hay barn? It can be nerve racking running out of hay during the winter months, so make sure you have plenty to last you, also taking in to consideration you will probably be feeding a bit extra in the winter to help keep the horses warm.
