Winter Blanket Weight and Durability
Posted by Saddle Up on Jan 25th 2017
Winter blankets come in different weights and durability depending on the needs of your horse. A young, healthy horse with a good coat will be fine in a less heavy blanket, whereas an older horse who has trouble keeping weight on, or a horse that must be kept clipped during the winter may benefit from a heavier blanket. If you want to prevent your blanket from ripping, you’ll want to invest in a more durable blanket.
Here is a guide of weight measurements and durability measurements.
Blanket weight is measured by the fill (usually polyester) of the blanket in grams. A turnout sheet has no fill. A medium blanket has about 180 grams – 200 grams of fill. A heavy weight blanket usually has 300 grams to about 420 grams of fill.
Denier is a measure of the nylon fiber density of the shell of the blanket. The higher the number, the more durable the blanket will be.
Denier ranges from 600D to about 1680D.
If you need a tougher
blanket, you’ll want to find one that is made of ballistic nylon. This is the
toughest and most durable nylon and is the least likely to tear.
