Trail Riding Tips
Posted by Saddle Up on Nov 13th 2015
Trail riding is a fun pastime for both horse and human! Being out in the outdoors does wonders for one's mind and soul and it gives the horse a chance to relax, be in a natural environment, and just be a horse. Some thought and preparation should go into a trail ride to make it a safe and positive experience for horse and human. Here's a few tips to get you started!
Horse and Rider Preparation:
Your horse should be prepared physically and mentally for the trails. He should be desensitized to scary situations as well as be responsive at all gaits. Both of you should have a mastery of the basic skills.

Make sure you are physically and mentally prepared as well! Most trail rides can last from anywhere to 2-3 hours to all day. Be sure not to tackle anything you or your horse aren't ready to handle just yet. You should also have good awareness as well as knowing what to do in emergency situations.

Packing for a Trail Ride:
Do your research about what you'll need to bring for your particular trail ride. Some basic needs include: Cell phone, water, snacks, first-aid kit (for both horse and human) and pocket knife. It's a good idea to keep your cell phone and your pocket knife on you in case you get separated from your horse.

On the Trail:
Be sure to exercise courtesy and etiquette while on the trail. This includes hikers, cyclists, as well as your fellow trail riders. It's better not to ride so close to your friends that you're tailgating. Keep one horse length between horses.

Clean up after yourself and your horses before you leave the trail-head to go home. This includes trash, manure... etc...
And most important... have fun!
Happy trails!
