Splint and Bell Boot Sizing
Posted by Saddle Up on Oct 19th 2016
Determining the proper splint and bell boot size is easier than you would think! Generally, splint and bell boots come in three sizes: small, medium, and large.
The height, weight, and bone structure of your horse are the deciding factors for what size you should purchase.
Here’s a quick and easy way to help you decide what size splint boot you should buy:
Small: 14 – 14.3 hands (ponies and smaller horses such as Arabians tend to do nicely in smalls)
Medium: 15 – 15.3 hands (this is your typical sized horse, such as a Quarter Horse)
Large: 16 – 16.3 (Warmbloods tend to need large sized boots)
You can also measure the circumference of your horse’s fetlock to help you determine the best size.
A splint boot should not be too tight as that could cause damage to the tendons. But it shouldn’t be too loose either as this might allow dirt to get between the boot and the leg causing abrasive rubbing.

Bell boot sizing is similar in that the height of the horse plays a major factor, so you can refer to the list above to get you started. You might also want to measure the circumference of the horse’s pastern to help in determining the right size.
