Non-Riding Horse Activities

There are some days where riding just isn’t possible, either because of weather or health issues. Here’s a list of some other fun activities you can do with your horse that isn’t riding!
Groundwork: Groundwork is fundamentally important for any horse and rider to establish and continuing practicing and learning. Find a couple of new exercises that you can teach your horse and incorporate into your tool box of groundwork exercises.
Lunging: Lunging is a great way to work your horse. You can lunge your horse over poles as well to spice things up a bit.
Liberty: Have you and your horse ever tried liberty work? It’s a great way to spend time with your horse out of the saddle and it strengthens the bond between you.
Obstacle Course: Build an obstacle course out of things lying around the barn or your house and lead your horse through it.
Go For a Walk: You can take your horse for a walk around the neighborhood, letting him graze every once and a while. Be sure you know if an area is sprayed for pesticides or not!
Hang Out: Sometimes it’s nice just to hang out with your horse, either in his stall, run, or pasture. Bring a book, something to draw, or just enjoy spending time with your horse.
Tricks: Is there a fun trick you’ve always wanted to teach your horse? Now’s the time to do it!
