Have you ever wondered why your horse or some horses like to put their noses right up to your face and breathe on you? You might think it strange or scary but the horse may be trying to say hello to you.

When two horses meet each other for the first time, they usually stand nose to nose breathing into each others nostrils. Some (not all) horses try to do this with humans.

This is not how we humans saw hello to horses. We usually stroke them on the nose, which is a perfectly good way to say hi to a horse, especially if it's one you don't know.

It can be disconcerting when a horse puts its muzzle right up to your face or you put yours so close to their nose. Always be cautious though and don't do this with a horse you don't know. Some horses have been known to nip humans on the face.

But if you have established proper boundaries with your horse and feel safe and comfortable,it can be fun to say hi to him by breathing gently into his nose. Or if the horse politely starts breathing onto your face, you can return the greeting.
