Breathe

How often do we find ourselves not breathing?

In today’s fast-paced road of work, activities, school, errands, and the never-ending to-do list sometimes the stress starts to suffocate us and we breathe shallowly.

And then we show up at the barn or walk outside our house to our horses. Perhaps this place is a peaceful and safe haven, where all your stress and anxiety melt away and you can breathe once again.

Or perhaps this place holds more stress and anxiety for you, whether it be from the people around you, memories from a riding accident, or you’ve only just begun your horsemanship journey and are learning how to communicate with these big, silent creatures. Perhaps your breathing stops here too.

There have been multiple studies about the benefits (besides the obvious) of breathing. It affects you, maybe more than you know.

It also affects the horses. Horses are so sensitive that they know when you’re not breathing. Some will have enough confidence in themselves to come along side you and be quiet and careful, while others may become agitated.

One of the best things you can do for yourself and your horses is to breathe. Breathe deep and consistently, even if you have to remind yourself multiple times throughout the session with your horse and throughout the day. You’ll find yourself more calm, peaceful, focused, and aware and may find your horse responding in kind.

Take a moment today (or several) and breathe.
