Basic Mane and Tail Care
Posted by Saddle Up on May 3rd 2017
Here are 3 basic ways you can take care of your horse’s mane and tail so they are healthy and gorgeous!
1. Proper diet is essential to good hair growth. If your horse isn’t getting its nutritional needs met, his hair and coat will not grow well and be dull, brittle, and all around unhealthy. Talk to your vet if you’re not sure if your horse is getting the nutrition he needs. There are also many good supplements and herbs you can give your horse to promote healthy hair growth.
2. Be careful when brushing your horse’s mane and tail! Be gentle and use a wide-combed brush and your fingers to gently untangle your horse’s mane and tail. If you use a regular brush you risk pulling out many strands of hair that will take a very long time to grow back, giving your horse a thin mane and tail as a result. Use a healthy, natural, non-drying conditioner to assist you as you “brush.” (Coconut oil works great as a conditioner!)
3. Wash your horse’s mane and tail, using a healthy, natural shampoo and conditioner (again, coconut oil works great as a conditioner!) Carefully brush the horse’s mane out with your fingers and a wide-combed brush.
