5 Common Horse Coat Colors

There are an incredible number of horse coat colors, variations, and special colorings. Here are 5 common horse coat colors and their distinctive markings to get you started!

Bay - a bay horse has a brown coat color (may be light or dark) with dark points on the ears, legs and sometimes other parts of their body. Mane and tail are black.

Black - to be considered black, a horse must have a pure black coat, mane and tail. Any lighter coloring and the horse would probably be considered a very dark bay.

Gray - gray horses look white and are very commonly referred to as white horses. But they are really gray horses because their skin is black with a white coat over it.

Chestnut - this color is the most popular image when someone says a "brown" horse. The coat, mane and tail are a reddish-brown color (may be lighter or darker)
